![]() I certainly don't feel like every game should control or feel the same, but I more just think that I had such a profound experience with Dread's controls and movement and the effects are lingering a bit. It's a very strange feeling because I never understood when people say something along the lines of, "After playing X, I can't enjoy Y anymore." And while that's definitely an exaggeration of how I feel in this case, I can at least understand the general sentiment now. In a genre as saturated as Metroidvanias, I'm always going to be making comparisons to the absolute best in the genre, and Dread really re-enforced to me just how important control and game feel is, and honestly nothing I have played since has measured up to it in that regard. Yeah, I admitted it wasn't really fair to criticize it in that way, but I just wanted to convey how I felt while playing it. I've heard the sequel improves upon many aspects of this game, so I look forward to playing it, though I'll probably wait a bit to avoid burnout. The best ones make me feel compelled to complete 100% but there really isn't much of a desire to do that here. Overall though I quite enjoyed my time to it and consider it on the upper edge of midtier Metroidvanias. And to add insult to injury, after I completed it the game crashed and I had to replay it. It often felt like things didn't "line up" properly, which was frustrating. I don't feel like the game properly telegraphed everything coming at you, especially with enemies that shoot projectiles at you that you have to dash jump off of. ![]() I also was not a fan of the escape sequences at all. Enemy variety was lacking, and the ones that are there weren't very creative and you are stuck with just a few basic moves to deal with them. The controls are decent enough, but the "game feel" wasn't quite there for me after playing a game with perhaps the most sublime control and movement I've ever experienced. The first one is probably unfair but, after Dread, movement just didn't feel great with Ori. There were several things holding the game back for me. Game length itself felt just right though, with my in game clock reading a bit under 7 hours at 75% completion. I just wish there were more expansive underwater sections. Controls were super smooth in the water and these moments had good ambience. Stringing together your abilities felt really good to overcome some tough challenges. I also really loved the focus on platforming. I think my favorite area was probably the mazelike dark woods (forgot what it was called). Music, art, and animation are top notch, and the minimalistic story was touching. Firstly I'll say that it's absolutely beautiful (obviously). I feel like it was a pretty good game but not quite a top tier Metroidvania experience. ![]() I've been in a Metroidvania mood since Dread. Just played and finished this over the last few days for the first time. ![]()
